witnessing another's achievements

it's important to support friends in their endeavors. we each have something to give, and something to gain from the experiences of others. honoring the work and gifts of others is good for everyone. beloved son & i attended a u.s. naval sea cadet award ceremony and inspection for a certain friend we'll call Q, who is an awesome human being. we were happy to witness his achievement, and honored that he invited us.

motivation

i try to post motivational images on my facebook page periodically. i'd been thinking about this image from last summer. today the words for it became more clear. so many ideas lately...one after the other. must remember my own advice.

wwii living history revisited

once upon a time there were little boys in cub scout uniforms. they liked ships and airplanes, all things mechanical and military, and retired chief grampas were considered cool. fast forward close to a decade. after completing a study on wwii war in the pacific, we returned to an old haunt: the uss hornet, followed by a visit to the naval museum, where one day many years ago the grampa showed the boys how to hold a flag ceremony. this time the chief showed them some gems of the museum. the boys are bigger, older, more mature, more attentive. in the mix on this day: one is gearing up for his eagle, one is a sea cadet. but they still think ships and airplanes and all things mechanical and military are cool. i suspect they appreciate the grampa even more now. great day. thanks mom and dad. and mom and grama, thanks for lunch!

a fortuitous visit: the artist of this new mural was on hand and willing to discuss his work.

for megan and shelly - such a fun session, so much more like play! to work with wonderful people, to have creative license over what one produces, to be appreciated, and to have fun...i am a lucky girl and i love my job.

j*rsey boys

when choosing christmas gifts this past winter, the choice became clear to purchase access to experiences rather than the purchasing of things. my mother hoped to see the Jersey Boys, the biographical musical of frankie valli and the four seasons. so, we purchased tickets for her. lucky, she chose to go with me. we spent a wonderful day in downtown san francisco this week, where she had never been. lunch, window shopping, and live theater in an art deco gem. what a treat to share it with my mom.

exploring

it has been said that the best way to learn something is to teach it. teaching photography classes has created a boon in my personal drive, something i never expected. another benefit is the rise in confidence, which in turn helps one push farther and reconsider. sometimes understanding how things work sets us free to break the rules a little bit and explore, to our advantage.

mask making industry

one of the boys decided to sell homemade masks as a fundraiser for the Ball. such an industrious soul. so the friends gathered here. they painted, glued, cut and glittered until a small collection assembled. we are missing one in our group photo, but it was fun nonetheless.

speaking of young friends

when their birthdays roll around, i post fun pictures like this on their facebook walls. so fun to read comments and make people smile. :)
